Readers Forum > Where to dine in Paris alone?

Hi Alexander, could you please suggest some restaurants that will happily accommodate a solo diner? I'm travelling alone to Paris from London for three days in late October and would like to enjoy fine food without feeling uncomfortable perched at a table alone. If the restaurant also happens to be a good place to meet people all the better.

Best, nicholas

Hi Nicholas,

One of the things that I like best about Paris is that solo diners are comfortable almost everywhere. Unlike London or New York, where restaurants don't like singles because they see the empty seat at the table as lost revenue, the man or woman on their own is received with respect and warmth in Paris restaurants.

One thing that's absolutely vital, however, is to book ahead of time. Having a reservation is the first step to being well-looked after and feeling comfortable.

With regard to specific restaurants, La Gazzetta, L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon (counter seating), Au Bascou, Casa Olympe and Le Pamphlet are all good. You'll find their addresses in my book. They're also other restaurants that I've recently reviewed on this site that might be good, including Itinerarire and L'Epigramme.

Have a wonderful time in Paris.

Best, Alec
